DECENTERING LABOR,
WHILE
EMBODYING
CARE
My name is Andra Brown, I am a licensed therapist & workshop facilitator in NYC. I help Black people stop overworking in their positions of leadership, & lead care-centered lives. I am dedicated to helping my community reimagine & reconnect with love, joy & rest - the three pillars of care - in creative ways.
HOW CAN WE EMBODY CARE AS
A LIFESTYLE?
MY BELIEFS
Black people work in some of the most harmful professional settings. When business & work production is valued over the actual worker, it leads to workplace trauma, which is very much so normalized in our capitalist structures. Many Black people seek leadership positions within these structures as a means of obtaining a sense of “stability,” and receive the exact opposite. The “freedom” that many Black folx seek through the position, end up being the same positions that keep us working, & overworking - day in & day out.
I do not believe that we can afford to keep embracing the “business before the worker” model. It is single handedly leading to illness, and deeply harming our mind-body-spirit. Many believe that they need to find a good “work-life balance,” when I believe that we need life to come before work - always, and forever.
So, how do we achieve such a life? I am a firm believer that it requires us to lead a care-centered life - one where care is embodied in all that we do. What am I referring to when I say care? I am referring to the provision of self, community & spiritual care. Care, not just as something we get, but something we actively engage in - a verb, if you will. I believe that there are three pillars that embody care - love, joy & rest. I believe that we need to engage with these three things to live, not just survive. I also believe that it is essential for our care practices to incorporate creativity, exploration, curiosity, & play in order to access all three pillars of care.
It should also be stated: while I have experience working with all types of professional leaders, I have a special interest in working with Black folx within creative industries (i.e., fashion, beauty, film, photography, music, etc). As a creative myself, I believe that the arts are essential to our liberation. Black creatives deserve a space to reimagine & reconnect with love, joy & rest in radical ways.
WHAT I OFFER
The services that I provide ensure that you do not have to go through this process alone. Read below to learn more about what I offer, and how I can help you to decenter labor, & embody care.
Individual Therapy
Your relationship to labor is preventing you from taking care of yourself in substantial ways. Through 1:1 sessions, discover the root of the issue on an individual, relational, and systemic level, along with ways in which you can integrate care practices into your day to day life.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy provides support to romantic couples, where one or both partner(s) may be struggling with overworking, & embodying the necessary care practices that the relationship needs to thrive. Couples will get the space to explore communication, resolve conflicts, and rebuild intimacy in meaningful ways.
Workshops & Groups
All groups & workshops work to help Black folx & allies reimagine what love, joy, & rest can look like for themselves, on both an individual & community level. All groups & workshops incorporate the arts to help us deepen our understanding of self and community in creative ways.
